Nothing brings a smile to my face more than going to check my mail and finding an affiliate check sitting there. Not just an affiliate check, but one from a website I rarely, if ever touch. A ten-Year-Old website that I have not updated with fresh content in 2 years or more. And it’s still making me money! I love Online Marketing!
Getting income from a website I don’t bother to update often, just pay its renewal and update the plugins, I call that “Free Money”. I never know how much or when it will happen because I have moved on to more important sites and efforts are needed elsewhere. But at least it’s still earning its keep in my stable of domains.
What I call my “legacy” sites, ones I started out with years ago and still have, prove to me that I am doing the right thing. I am working where I need to be and that’s online, helping others. Teaching others what I learn, what I know and what I know works.
Getting these checks always makes me remember conversations I used to have with an ex-brother-in-law who thought working the 9-5 was the way to live. To be in charge of my own destiny may not always be glamorous or make me the big bucks. But it’s nice to be the one who decides what I do each day and for who I want to work with.
Why is it working? Making Money?
That’s the big question I get often. Is “how can a website that has no fresh content, still is attracting visitors? How can people still be finding it and clicking the links?
It’s a very simple answer. One that many people have a difficult time understanding and are afraid to try (including me sometimes). The websites are filled with posts that are original content. Not spun, not rehashed. But real content that is created in easy to read and understand words and structure. It’s organic. The content was not created for the search engines. it was meant for people to read, understand and take action with.
The affiliate websites are niche specific and some may even say in narrow niches. Or deep niches. I made them for a very specific audience that has very specific needs. The ads are focused on those people and that niche. Not just ads that I posted some code on and let them ride.
If you focus on the reader, the website visitor and know who they are, the content doesn’t have to be fresh and always up to date. Make it content anyone can read and understand. Then make sure the links go to websites and affiliates that can help solve their problem. Not just a link to an affiliate that promises YOU big bucks if they make a sale for something that may not be related to your niche.
So don’t freak out if you have a website that isn’t always updated with fresh content. As long as you have great content, you will always have an audience. It’s not an easy way to make money, so don’t let your main website linger. This is just to let you know that older websites you no longer focus on, can still be earning their keep. And that’s always a nice feeling!
