Have you stopped to really listen to a speaker recently? Have you listened to a sales pitch or your boss talking about the company or a product? Maybe even a YouTuber who wanted to win your business? Ever notice why? It’s in their presentation. That’s what has your attention. the style and the skill.
Listening to the State of the Union speech last week and to almost any speech that President Trump gives, I realize that the art of public speaking has gone away. That most people today just want to talk At you. They want you to hear how special they are and what they will do for you.
As I listened to the President, I realize I am just as guilty of that as anybody.
Donald Trump has always been one of those speakers that follows a winning pattern. He likes to open up or to start a new portion of his presentation by recognizing somebody. To talk about what they did for Him or how they went above and beyond. And that is something that can really improve your ability to close a deal or to win a sale.
You start to talk about “them”. Talk about “we”, “us”. Back off on “me”. Try to use less “I” in your sentences. Make them feel like you are talking to them as if they were part of your team, your tribe. What can you do for them? What have they done for you?
People love to be appreciated. They love to hear their name spoken by people of importance. The boss, the President. “They talked about me in the meeting today” makes a person feel appreciated, wanted. Making them feel a part of the conversation means they will listen longer. They will respond better and they will follow your suggestions more because you cared and you noticed.
Take a look at your presentations. Look at your YouTube videos. Are there places where you could try this? To take out the word “me” and replace it with “we”?? Do you think this helps in the long run to get followers? To get people to comment more positively on your videos? I think so.
Try it and let me know the results. Ok?
