The number one question I get about making a living online is “what is the easiest way to get started?” My stock answer is to start a blog, get on social media and start using Affiliate Marketing.
What is Affiliate Marketing?
Here is a simple explanation as to that question. You read a book and you love the book. So you tell your friends, coworkers and anyone else who will listen about this book. You encourage them to go to a specific website to buy this book. For each book you sell, you get 4% (Amazon pays 4%). Would you do it? Why wouldn’t you?
Now imagine this. What if you got paid beyond today for sales? I mean, if you had a blog and you talked about the book and other books you have read and movies you have rented. Now you post about them and put a link to where they can go to get what you just talked about. They make a purchase and you get paid.
Work Once, Get Paid Forever
So you make the post today. February 2, 2020. You will get paid for each sale you make from today until that merchant stops selling what you are recommending or your blog goes away. Yes. Indefinitely. Work Once. Get Paid Forever!
I have one website that I made 5 years ago. A super focused niche website that was not meant to be around very long. I have not touched that website since I built it with WordPress. Every six months I go in and update the plugins. Once every other year I renew the domain name. That is all. Yet every three months or so, I get several affiliate checks from sales made off the affiliate links on that website. The product(s) pays a bit more than 4% (actually 25%) and I have been getting those checks 4 to 5 times a year for 5 years! I worked once and I am still getting paid from that work today. With that kind of return, I have no reason to turn it off.
BTW: Good SEO helps keep the website in the top search rankings for its niche!
But it’s only x%!
I love that argument when people want to say Affiliate Marketing is not a real money maker. You only get 4%! (Amazon). Others will pay a little more and once you get established, big brands will come looking for you and offer you some really great rates. But the point is that it is not “work today and get paid for today”. Its that you get paid into the future. If you have 2, 3, 4 or ten affiliates you work with, you get more checks, larger checks. More checks equal more money.
The Tiffany Principle
When I was chauffeuring in Phoenix Arizona in the ’80s, one of my clients was the 16-year-old MTV darling named Tiffany. In an interview, she took a reporter to the woodshed for asking a question about her manager’s fee. It was reported that she was getting paid $250,000 per concert and that George Tobin, her manager was getting 50% of that for his fee. Much like Colonel Parker was getting for managing Elvis Presley. The typical manager’s fee is under 20%
She answered the reporter by laying out the mathematics of the arrangement. What would you pay someone if they could help you make a lot more money then you are currently making?
Look at it this way: She was bussing tables at a restaurant to help her mother make ends meet. Basically working for tips. George found her and made her into a worldwide headlining star. So let’s say she was getting paid $250,000 a night with Mr. Tobin as her manager. That was $249, 550 more than she was making daily bussing tables. If I could show you how to go from working for tips to making $250K a night, legitimately just using your talents and my management skills, would that be worth giving me half?
Think about that when you are searching for affiliates to work with. It’s often a small commission. But it’s a way to make money while talking about something you use, you believe in or you have tried. You get many more sales. Especially when you will get paid for that promotion going forward without any more real effort.
Plus you should never have just one affiliate to work with. But that’s another post!
Start Something Today
Start now. A blog, a YouTube Channel and Social Media marketing. Start by talking about things you know, want to know or that you believe in and can support. Find an affiliate that sells the products and services you would normally use. Then find their affiliate program and start getting paid for your referrals.
There is not a product or service available to the consumer today, that is not available using affiliate marketing
If you bought the product somewhere, I am sure there is an affiliate link for the product somewhere out there. So you can literally start to make money from almost everything you use today by starting a blog today. Being new to the online world, most major affiliate networks won’t work with you. So I often recommend Skimlinks for new bloggers. They work with thousands of brands and they work great when you want to make international links with Amazon.
As a network like this, they do take a percentage of your money as a management fee. Most of the networks don’t do that. But a lot of the networks have a lot of rules and requirements for being an affiliate with them. This way you don’t need to get approved by each affiliate and worry about being “delinked” because your sales fell below a certain level. Skimlinks works when and where others don’t.
It’s Your Word
Be very careful on who you hook up with in Affiliate Marketing. Especially f you are developing yourself as the brand you are promoting. Do not do affiliate marketing just for the money. Make sure it’s with a product or service you can stand behind. If you are out there and pushing people to click a link and to buy a product, they are doing so because they trust you and what you are saying.
Yes, I push Amazon because its easy, as well as just about anyone with a heartbeat in America, has an Amazon account. So I know they will feel safe buying something from Amazon. My other affiliate networks I use because I have used their services or their products.
One final tip on Affiliate Marketing. Have the products and the links match what your blog or channel is about. if you are talking movies and an ad pops up for flowers or for mufflers, the person reading will start to wonder about the trustworthiness of the writer. Be serious. Be real and you will soon be cashing some really nice affiliate checks!
