As I was starting to work on this post and video, I found this quote and it fits perfectly.
“Do Something Today That Your Future Self will Thank you for”
People, at this time of the year, begin to reflect on the year that has passed and start to see what they want to move to the future. Maybe not “want to move” but will be moving because they just didn’t do it this year and said they really wanted to do it. They want to move forward with a new way to work, to have another income, to make life more enjoyable and satisfying.
But they find a reason to let it slip away until “next time”. Well, let’s make next time, this time by doing it today. Let’s make it easy, simple and rewarding. Yes, let’s start a blog. Not a video channel or an Instagram account we think will rock the world. Let’s start slow and steady with a blog we write in every day or so. The others will come soon enough.
Blogging is the modern version of journaling and it really will help you create a better future and will open doors for new opportunities you haven’t even thought of yet. By writing things down, you get to see things from a new point of view. By blogging, other people get to see them and offer their points of view. People see what your thinking and pondering and they may know how to help or offer suggestions on ways you can help them solve the same issues, this time for money or maybe an exchange or trade.
Being free, means you are not risking anything but your time. No money and that can be a stress reliever right there.
You start to write about frustrations at work, your favorite movie or worst night of your life and you start to see patterns. Then the brain starts to look around for alternatives, solutions, maybe ways to do something better the next time. As you write, you start to get into a pattern, develop a “voice” and that voice grows. Suddenly you decide to take action on something you didn’t know needed to be acted on and it changes your view, your career, your life.
As you write, other people start to find you and start to add their voices thru email or comments. You develop a conversation and new ideas, new directions new solutions come to your mind.
Devine intervention? Maybe, depends on how you think or what you believe. Any way you look at it, blogging opens up new doors to opportunities you did not know existed before.
It also helps to have a documented trail, a path you can go back to and see where things changed, thoughts changed and those doors you did not know existed, where they began to open up.
You write for yourself, not caring about what others will think. That may be the bottleneck in your desires to be happier and more successful than you are now, is that you used to care what others thought and made changes to satisfy them. But this is your journal, your space. You are in charge of what is written.
This also gets you into a habit. You start to want to write, to create and experiment with the new ideas you are coming up with. That’s good. You document your life, your job, your friends, your struggles, your questions and after a while, you will start to see answers and new ideas as well as new directions. If this is business or career-related you may, you could find yourself, as I have, finding someone who left a comment on one of your posts, who wants to talk, wants to hire you. Wants to know what would you charge to do “this” or maybe they have a solution for a problem like a new career offer, school opportunity or business proposition.
Have you ever stopped to look at the many successful businesses were started with “I saw you can do “this” could you do that for me and how much will you charge?” Some of my first paid consulting gigs were from a presentation I gave at a business club. (Before we had blogging we actually had to go out and speak to real people!) Many of my best tours came from a tour company reading a blog post or watching a video and contacting me. Most of the time, the tour gig was mine before I even told them my price! A simple speech or a simple blog post easily leads to a nice secondary income stream. Simple marketing!
It Starts Today. It Starts for Free
Let’s not go another year with “I will start it soon”. It all starts with you starting to write. Just start. Like today! Go to wordpress.com and open an account.
FYI: This is a free link, I’m not making any money from it. I just want you to get a jump on your goals for next year!
WordPress .com is a free blogging platform where you get to build a website for free. It’s on their domain. You can’t advertise on it and can’t do much else for monetization, but its free and easy to use. Great for starting out, getting the lay of the land and getting into the habit of blogging. WordPress.org is the software side. When you self-host like I do.
You can also try Blogger.com. These two are the oldest, most stable and have a firm footing and they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. So you know it will be there for you in the future. The others are having some issues and may or may not be around much longer.
The problem, as well as the advantage of starting here, is that your content is mixed in with a bunch of other people’s content, blogs. It’s your subdomain on their main domain. Example: askmrmark.wordpress.com instead of askmrmark.com. The benefit is that your content shows up on the sidebars of other peoples blogs just as theirs shows up on your sidebar. You get t see them, their readers get to see yours.
On top of all that you are writing, you are also developing the skill needed to move on to bigger and better things. No money involved means you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Use this as your training wheels for the next great adventure you will be going on in 2019
Right now, I just want you to start something. Nothing big fancy or with grandiose plans or money. Just get out there and start the blog. Experiment, stretch your wings, try something new. Everything can be changed as you grow and find what it is you want to do or what it is you want from this adventure, But you need to start something today!
Commit to it. Commit to starting a blog today and that you will post content there at least twice a week. Give it a theme, a purpose and just start it now!
No excuses. My first blog was probably 50 words this one is well over one thousand and its been cut down a lot! don’t worry about word count or length. My first podcast I know was less than 2 minutes. My first YouTube video barely broke one minute. But you build from there as you get comfortable and find your own voice, style, and purpose..
GO do it today, hit the links below and start something today. Then tell me about it. After a week, tell me about it. After a month again tell me how it’s going. Let’s share stories and swap ideas. Agree? Good…
Your Future Self Will Thank You For it!
