Do you remember last week? When Google said that it would shut down Google Plus, the company’s long-struggling answer to Facebook’s giant social network after it discovered a security vulnerability that exposed the private data of up to 500,000 users. Now What?
Many people didn’t even know they had a Google Plus account or just forgot about it. According to Google, the average visitor stayed on the site for about five seconds!! However, there are still some strong and active groups on the site that will need to move to another Google product or another website altogether.
However, for many in the internet marketing world, Google Plus was our way to getting a website or webpage indexed quickly. Posting it on G+ was like personally handing it over to the Search SPider yourself. As it was owned by Google and operated side by side. It was just a natural extension of its primary services.
I can tell you that many times, I would receive an email of thanks or a comment or even a phone call to talk about a post that I made that was promoted on my G+ page. They got the contact information from my website. When asked how they found it, they said Google search, not G+. So I know it was the G+ posting that linked to the website.
Well, if you use G+ as a means of indexing and Search Engine Marketing, you may feel a little left out and wondering where to turn to now for that quick fix. Well, it’s a brother by a similar mother may be the answer and one I was hoping you were already using: YouTube and Video Marketing in general. Like feeding the search giant your URL via a link on a G+ post, YouTube does the exact same thing. It tells Google Search that you just posted a new video and it needs to go check it out. The text, the closed captioning, is all read by the spiders and they follow the links you provide in the content in the descriptions. Following the links, you included int he video description back to your website and to your social media accounts. All things Google looks for when ranking a post. To see that you are well connected and hustling your sites.
People don’t Read The Descriptions!
Don’t care. The search spiders read them and that’s all that matters. The spiders follow the links, read the keywords used and see if it matches the closed captioning. All the signs they need to know how to rank and respond to a search query.
So fill in the descriptions, use the long-tail keywords and include the proper links to your website, social media accounts, and affiliate links.
Yes, You Still Need a Website
Hate to sound cold, but I have no love loss for those who are still building their business or their brand on another site that is not their own. They built a brand on MySpoace and it went away. They build a brand on FaceBook and may be losing that here soon as well. They keep thinking that its past the time of having a website only to be proven again, that you need to use the social media sites as a bridge back to your website where you hold the controls, control the message and offer the information they are really looking for. Its the website that you will not lose by some simple twist of fate or hacker that was not reported.
